No Hand Has Been On Your Shoulder

This message is for nobody in years having put a hand on your shoulder and said your name out loud to God

He does it about eleven times a week and he has not had it done to him since a conference in 2019.

The gesture is entirely ordinary. You put a hand on somebody's shoulder, or between the shoulder blades, and you say their name, and then you say something to God about them out loud. Twenty seconds. He has done it in kitchens and hospital corridors and once in a bus shelter in the rain.

There is something about hearing your own name in somebody else's mouth in a prayer. It is not the words. It is that a person has taken your name into their own mouth and handed it upward, and something in a human being responds to that in a way it does not respond to anything else.

He has watched it work on hundreds of people. He has watched grown men who did not want it at all go completely still.

And the last time it happened to him was in a side room at a conference in 2019, by a man he did not know and has not seen since, who did it because he was on a team and there was a queue.

It counted. He is not being ungrateful. It was kind and it was real and he remembers it.

He is aware that this is a strange thing to be keeping track of. He has never mentioned it and he would find it hard to explain to anybody without sounding like a man asking for something.

But here is the thought that came to him in the car park after a funeral in the spring, and it came without any self pity at all, in the flat way that true things arrive.

He had just prayed over the widow with a hand on her shoulder, by name, in the car park, and it had been the right thing and she had held onto his arm afterwards.

And driving out he thought: I am extremely good at doing that. And nobody has done it to me for six years. And if I dropped dead on this road, the thing I am best at in the world is a thing I have almost no experience of receiving.

No Hand Has Been On Your Shoulder

The first person to name Him was a servant nobody was using the name of

Before anything else, let me tell you what this is and hold to it.

There is nothing here for you to do. No request to make, nobody to approach, no suggestion at the end that you should ask somebody. If a line of this becomes a task then it has failed and you should ignore it. You are being given something and asked for nothing whatsoever.

Now, there is a scene in Genesis that is easy to walk past and is one of the most astonishing things in the book.

A woman is running away into a desert. She is a servant, foreign, pregnant, and she has been treated badly. And it is worth noticing how the people around her talk about her: to Abram, Sarai calls her thy maid. She is referred to by function almost every time she appears.

And then this.

And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go?Genesis 16:8

Hagar.

He says her name. In a wilderness, to a servant on the run, when the people who owned her house were referring to her by her job.

And then, at the end of that conversation, she does something no one else in the entire Bible does before her.

And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me.Genesis 16:13

The first person recorded in Scripture as giving God a name is a foreign servant woman alone in a desert, and the name she gives Him is the God who sees.

So hear this, driving out of a car park after a funeral: your name has been said out loud, and it was said first, and it was said by the only voice that has ever counted. That is not my comfort; it is what His word records about who gets addressed by name in a wilderness, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who takes an ancient desert conversation and lands it in a man who has been keeping a tally since 2019.

Now let me say something about the tally, because you have been embarrassed by it and you should not be.

You are not a man asking for something. You have been noticing an asymmetry, accurately, for six years, and you have kept it entirely to yourself, and you have gone on doing the thing eleven times a week without one word of complaint.

Noticing is not neediness. His word never once treats a person's awareness of what they lack as a failure of character, and the Holy Spirit is not the one who has been telling you that keeping track of this makes you the sort of man who wants attention.

And here is the thing about the gesture itself, and why it works, and why its absence has been sitting on you.

It works because a name in somebody else's mouth is proof of being held in another mind. That is the whole mechanism. And you know it works, because you have watched it undo hundreds of people who thought they were fine.

Which means what you have been missing is not a ritual. It is evidence of being held in a mind.

And that evidence exists. It is not in a side room at a conference. It is in a desert in Genesis where the God who sees said a servant's name before anybody else in that household bothered to use it, and He has been saying yours in exactly the same way, on roads, in car parks, for six years, and the reason you have not heard it is that it does not arrive through ears.

You are held in a mind tonight. Scripture puts the naming first on God's side and never waits for a human being to get round to it, and the Holy Spirit has had your name in front of Him on every road you have driven home on.

The breakthrough

Your name is in front of Him.

Not in a queue at a conference. In a desert, before anybody else in the household was using it, in the one scene in Scripture where a person who had been referred to by her job for years hears somebody say what she is actually called.

And she named Him back. Thou God seest me. That is the name a servant woman gave God out of that conversation, and it is the oldest name for Him in the book, and it came out of exactly the situation you have been in for six years.

You have not been unnamed. You have been un-echoed, which is a different thing and a real loss and you may call it one. Nobody has handed your name upward in a while, and you have handed hundreds of other people's up, and the asymmetry is real and you have noticed it correctly.

And the naming that matters never once waited for a human being to be free.

Nothing is asked of you here. Nobody to approach, nothing to request, no arrangement. That was the promise and it holds to the last word. You are being told that the God who sees said your name a long time before anybody in a side

You are seen by name and you were seen first by the One who does the seeing. It is written that she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, you are a God of seeing (Genesis 16:13), said by a woman alone in a wilderness with nobody's hand on her at all. The Holy Spirit is the One who makes that a hand on a shoulder when there is not a person in the room. room did.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in whatever voice you have got. Not one line here is my idea about you. Every one of them stands on His word, and it is the Holy Spirit and never the wording who makes a spoken sentence land in a person. The authority in them was given to you by Christ, who is in you, and it does not run out when you do. Speak to the thing, not about it. And whatever He does in the year ahead, He does in His own way and His own time.

  1. Years of my own name going unsaid in a prayer, you are not a measure of whether I am seen. Genesis 16 has the angel of the LORD saying Hagar in a desert while the household she came from was calling her by her job.
  2. Embarrassment about having kept a tally since 2019, in the name of Jesus you are put off this step. Noticing an asymmetry accurately for six years and never once complaining about it is not neediness, and Scripture nowhere calls awareness a defect.
  3. God, You are the One a servant woman named Thou God seest me, and that is the oldest name for You in the book. Your Spirit has had my name in front of You on every road I have driven home on, and I am holding my hands open and taking it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
