Nothing LeftMatthew 11:29

The One Thing You Canceled

This message is for the guilt of canceling one evening in eleven years and how long you have been paying for it

It was a Thursday in November and she has thought about it more than any Sunday she has ever preached.

She had a temperature on the Tuesday and a proper one, the kind where you put your hand on your own forehead and are surprised. By Wednesday it had broken. By Thursday morning she was tired and headachy and perfectly capable of standing up in a room and talking for forty minutes, and she knew she was, and that is the whole problem.

She sent the message at eleven in the morning. Eight words. Not well, so sorry, we will pick it up next week.

Fourteen people replied. Every single one of them said something kind. Somebody sent a picture of a cat in a blanket. Somebody else said, and she can still see the exact wording, honestly you never stop, take the night.

And she has been paying for it for two and a half years.

Not out loud. Nobody in her building has the first idea. What happens is this: whenever she is tired now, that Thursday arrives. It comes in and sits down and says, you have form for this. It says, remember, you have already proved that you fold. It says, the temperature had gone by Thursday and you knew it had.

So she does not cancel things. She has not canceled one thing since, not a meeting, not a coffee, not a visit, not the evening her sister was passing through, and there is a straight line from a cat in a blanket to a woman two and a half years later who is running on nothing and cannot allow herself to stop, and the line is made of one message she sent at eleven in the morning.

She would tell you she is not a legalist. She preaches grace beautifully. People have wept in that room.

She just does not apply any of it to a Thursday in November.

The One Thing You Canceled

Somebody is already standing in it

There is a sentence in Matthew that gets read at people who are tired, and it is nearly always read as an offer of a lighter workload. It is not. It is a description of who is in the harness.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.Matthew 11:29

A yoke is a beam across two animals. That is what the word means and it is the only thing the word means. It is not a saddle and it is not a pack. It is a two-place harness, and there is no such thing as a yoke for one.

So when He says take my yoke, He is not handing you a lighter load to carry by yourself. He is saying there is a place beside Him in a harness He is already standing in, and the standard way a young animal was trained in that world was to be put in the second position beside one who already knew the field. The trained one sets the pace. The trained one takes the weight at the turn. The young one is not carrying the plow; the young one is learning the line.

Hear that over you right now, on whatever evening this is. You are not the one pulling this. You never have been, not on your best week, and the eleven years of not canceling did not add one ounce of pull to a beam that God is standing in. That is not my encouragement. That is what His word says a yoke is, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes a definition like that arrive in a person as relief instead of information.

Now look at what that does to the Thursday.

If the work is yours to pull, then one canceled evening is a gap in the field, and a gap is a thing to answer for, and two and a half years of not stopping is simply the honest repayment schedule of somebody who let the team down once. That is exactly how it has felt. But if He was in the harness the whole time, then nothing was left unpulled on that Thursday. Not one furrow. The field got plowed by the one who was always doing the pulling, and the young one had a temperature and lay down, which is what young ones do, and the trained one did not once look round.

And here is what I most want you to have. He knew you would cancel. Before He ever put you in that harness He knew there would be a November, and He put you in it anyway, with His eyes open, because meek and lowly in heart is not a mood He was in that day. It is what He is like, permanently, and His word says so in the same breath as the yoke.

So the guilt has no standing here. You are free of that Thursday right now, not because it was justified, and not because you were sicker than you thought, but because there was never a debt on it in the first place. His word says the rest is found in the harness and not after the harness, and the Holy Spirit is the one who unpicks two and a half years of accounting in a person who has been doing the sums nightly.

Look at the arithmetic you have been doing, actually, because I want to name it and then take the pen off you.

You have been treating one canceled evening as evidence about your character. Eleven years of showing up went into the ledger as normal, expected, the baseline, worth nothing. One Thursday went in as data. That is not humility and it is not high standards. That is a broken scale, and a broken scale is not more accurate just because it always weighs against you.

You are not the person who folds. You are a person who was ill in November and rested for one evening in over a decade, and every kind reply you got was accurate. Nothing in Scripture treats a body's limit as a moral failure, and the Holy Spirit has never once used a person's tiredness as an exhibit against them.

Let me say one more thing before we go on, because it belongs in any message written to somebody this depleted. If it has gone past tiredness, if there have been thoughts lately you would not repeat in your own kitchen, please do not sit alone with that tonight. In the United States you can call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one actual person who can be with you before you sleep. That is not folding. That is a harness working the way a harness works, and God is the one who built it for two.

The breakthrough

The Thursday is not on your account.

It never was. There has been no debt sitting there for two and a half years, no interest accruing, no ledger with your name at the top of it, and the reason there is not is not that the illness was bad enough. It is that He is the one in the harness and He has never in His life sent an invoice to somebody standing next to Him.

You can stop paying now. Today, in this chair. Not because you have finally repaid it but because there was nothing to repay and the accounts department was one tired woman with a broken scale.

Nothing is being asked of you here. No resolution, no better rhythm, no promise about next Thursday. You are simply being told whose yoke it is and who has been pulling, and being told it by somebody who is glad about it.

You are pulling in a yoke that was never yours alone, and one canceled evening in eleven years has not been charged to you anywhere. It is written, take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls (Matthew 11:29). The Holy Spirit is the One who makes gentle and lowly a description of the One holding the other side.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in whatever voice you have tonight. Not one line here is my idea about you. Every one of them stands on His word, and it is the Holy Spirit and never the wording who makes a spoken sentence land in a person. The standing to say them is not something you earn with an unbroken record: Christ is in you, and every scrap of authority in these words was given to you by Him. Speak to the thing, not about it. And whatever He does with the week ahead, He does in His own way and His own time.

  1. Thursday in November, you are not a debt and I am not still paying you off. Matthew 11 says the yoke is His and the rest is found inside it, so the field was plowed by the One who was always pulling and there is no gap in it with my name on.
  2. Verdict that I am the kind of person who folds, in the name of Jesus you are struck out of this house tonight. Eleven years went on the scale as nothing and one evening went on as evidence, and a scale that only weighs against me was never a measure of anything.
  3. Lord, You are meek and lowly in heart and You said so in the same breath as the harness. Your Spirit sets the pace and I am walking beside You, and I am learning the line instead of hauling the plow.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
