My Family Pays2 Corinthians 3:17

Children Who Learned To Be Watched

This message is for children who learned to behave well because there were always people watching them

Her eldest is seventeen and she does a thing with her eyes before she speaks, and it takes about a fifth of a second, and her mother sees it every single time.

She checks the room.

Not nervously. There is nothing anxious about it, and anybody watching from outside would see a confident, pleasant, unusually poised young woman. That is exactly the problem. She is extremely good at this. Before she says anything in a group she has established, without appearing to, who is present, what they will make of it, and whether it needs adjusting.

She has been doing it since she was about six.

Her mother noticed properly at a family thing in the spring, on her sister's side, where nobody was from the church and nobody had any interest in any of it. Her cousins were shouting over each other and getting things wrong and being ridiculous and enjoying themselves enormously, in the specific way of teenagers who have never once been observed.

And her daughter sat in the middle of it, warm and funny and completely present, and did the eye thing before every single sentence.

Here is the small detail she cannot get past. That afternoon her daughter told a story, a good one, and got to the end of it and made a joke that was genuinely funny and slightly rude. And in the half second afterwards she looked, very quickly, at her mother.

She has never once needed to look. She has never been corrected for a joke in her life. Nobody in that house has ever asked her to be an example of anything, and both her parents have gone to considerable lengths to keep the words minister's daughter out of the building.

She learned it anyway, off the environment, the way you learn an accent.

Children Who Learned To Be Watched

Where Paul puts the liberty

There is a short verse in Corinthians that says something quite specific about where freedom comes from, and it does not say what people usually assume.

Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.2 Corinthians 3:17

Notice what it does not locate liberty in.

It does not say where there are no observers, there is liberty. It does not say where the pressure lifts, or where the family moves, or where a person stops being anybody's daughter, there is liberty. It puts liberty in a Presence, and the Presence is portable, and it is available in a room with forty people in it who all know exactly whose child you are.

So hear this, sitting in a churchyard: your daughter's freedom is not waiting for her to leave. That is not my hope for her; it is where His word actually locates liberty, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who takes a preposition like that and makes it useful to a mother who has been watching her child check a room for eleven years.

Now let me name the cost honestly first, because you have been alone with it and I am not going to skip past it to get to the good bit.

It is a real cost. A child learned to run a fifth of a second of assessment before speaking, and she learned it from an environment that you built by being what you are, and she did not consent to it and could not have. That is true. It is not exaggerated and you are not being precious about it, and every parent in your position knows the eye thing and almost nobody says it out loud.

Sit in that for a second. Then let me tell you what else is true.

What your daughter learned is a skill, and skills can be laid down. She is not damaged. She is a seventeen year old who reads rooms extremely well, which is a capacity that a great many adults would give a good deal for, and the trouble with it is not that she has it but that she cannot currently switch it off.

That switch is not yours to install. Scripture puts the liberating in the Spirit of the Lord and never in a parent's arrangements, and the Holy Spirit is entirely able to free a person inside the very room she learned the habit in.

And here is what I most want you to have, and it is about the half second when she looked at you.

She looked at you and there was nothing to find. No flinch, no check, no correction. She has been running that test for eleven years and getting the same result every time, and children run tests until the result is believed, and belief takes considerably longer than evidence.

You have been the answer to that habit for her whole life without knowing it. Every time she has looked and found nothing, the habit has lost a little of its grip, and the losing is slow because it started at six and eleven years is not very long against that.

You may bless her tonight without deciding anything about her. Nothing in Scripture puts another person's freedom under a parent's authority, and the Holy Spirit works in a seventeen year old at His own pace, in ways no household has ever been able to schedule.

The breakthrough

The liberty does not require the room to empty.

That is the whole of it. Paul does not put freedom in an absence of observers. He puts it in a Presence, and the Presence is with your daughter now, in the churchyard, in the family gathering, in the fifth of a second before she speaks.

And what she has learned is a habit and not an identity. It is eleven years deep and it will take time, and it is not damage and it is not permanent and it is not yours to remove.

You did not do this to her on purpose and you could not have prevented it, and the thing you have actually been doing, every time she looked at you and found nothing, is the slow work that takes a habit apart.

Nothing is asked of you here. No conversation, no change in the house, no apology to a seventeen year old who would not know what you meant. Write her name and bless her.

You have freedom in the room where the Spirit is, and that freedom is on offer to a girl who grew up being watched. It is written that where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom (2 Corinthians 3:17). The Holy Spirit is the freedom named in it, and He is in that house whether or not anybody is looking.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, over the page. Not one line here is my idea about you. Every one of them stands on His word, and it is the Holy Spirit and never the wording who makes a spoken sentence land in a person. The authority in them was given to you by Christ, who is in you, and it does not run out when you do. Speak to the thing, not about it. And whatever He does in my children, He does in His own way and His own time.

  1. Years of being looked at, you did not make my children and you do not get the last word on them. 2 Corinthians 3 says where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty, and it puts freedom in a Presence and not in an empty room.
  2. Fear that a habit learned at six is now who my daughter is, in the name of Jesus you are put out of this churchyard. What she learned is a skill and skills can be laid down, and eleven years is not very long against a thing that started that early.
  3. God, You are the Lord who is that Spirit, and You free people inside the very rooms where they learned to perform. Your Spirit works in a seventeen year old at a pace no household can schedule, and I am blessing her name over this page and deciding nothing for her.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
