Afraid That Stopping Would Prove Something

He has worked out, over about six years, an extremely good set of reasons why this is not the week.

They are genuine reasons. That has to be said first, because a man who was inventing excuses would be easier to help and this is not that. There actually is a funeral. There actually is the thing with the lease. The couple actually are at a point where a gap would be badly timed, and he actually is the only one who knows how the boiler behaves.

Every single reason is true. And there has been an unbroken chain of true reasons stretching back six years, and he has never once looked at the chain.

His wife looked at it in March. She did not say anything unkind. She said one sentence, in the car, in the voice people use when they have thought about the wording: I think you are afraid of what a quiet week would tell you.

He said something dismissive and changed the subject and has thought about it every day since.

Because here is what is underneath, and he can see it now, and it is not attractive. If he goes away for a week, one of two things happens. Either the place struggles, in which case he comes back to a mess and it costs him more than the week was worth. Or it does not struggle. It runs. The meetings happen, somebody preaches, the boiler behaves itself for a stranger, and nothing whatsoever goes wrong.

And the second one is the one he cannot face. Because he has quietly built a whole self out of being the load-bearing wall of that building, and a smooth week without him would be an experiment with a result, and he does not want the result.

So he does not run the experiment. He keeps the chain of true reasons going. And the cost of not running it is that he has been at ninety percent depleted for six years, defending a hypothesis he has never tested, in a building that God has never once asked him to hold up.

The rest was there before the work was

There is a line in Hebrews that reads oddly until you notice its tense, and then it will not leave you alone.

There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.Hebrews 4:9

Remaineth. Something that is left over. Something already in existence, still standing, not yet used up.

The argument the writer has been making for a chapter and a half is that this rest is not a new arrangement. It goes back to the seventh day, before there was a nation, before there was a tabernacle, before there was one single piece of religious work for anybody to do. The rest was in the world before the working was.

Which means it was never earned into being, and it cannot be forfeited by a man having a bad six years, and it is not a reward issued at the far end of a job well done. It remains. It is a standing feature of the country you live in.

So hear this over you in the car. You are not the load-bearing wall, and you never were, not for one day of the six years. That is not my opinion about your church. It is what His word says about who has been holding things up since the seventh day, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who takes a doctrine like that and puts it in a man's shoulders where he can feel the weight lift.

Now look at the experiment you have refused to run.

You are right that a quiet week would produce a result. What you have got wrong is what the result would mean. You have assumed the sentence is: they did fine, therefore you are not needed. But that sentence has a hidden premise in it, which is that being needed is what makes a man worth having, and that premise is not in Scripture anywhere. It came from somewhere else and you have been defending it at enormous cost. The Holy Spirit is the One who makes that true in a person rather than merely accurate on a page.

Here is what the result would actually mean. It would mean God kept a church for a week, which is what He does with churches, and it would say nothing at all about whether He wanted you in it. A father does not love a son according to how badly the house would fall down without him.

You are wanted rather than required, and that is the better of the two by an enormous distance. His word never once grounds a person's standing in their indispensability, and the Holy Spirit has never made anybody's welcome conditional on the building leaning.

And notice what the fear has actually been costing, because it is not only the week.

Six years of ninety percent depletion is not a fee you paid to keep a hypothesis safe. It is six years of a man being tired in a way that God did not require and did not enjoy watching. That is not said to condemn you. It is said because you have been treating the tiredness as the price of loyalty, and it was never that. It was the price of a question you would not let anybody answer.

You are held tonight without being necessary. Right now, with the chain of true reasons still on the fridge, because His word says the rest remains for the people of God, and the people of God is a category you are in by mercy and not by function, and the Holy Spirit has been trying to get you into it for six years.

Let me say the plain thing before we go on, because this is written for somebody depleted. If it has gone past tiredness lately, if there have been thoughts in that car you would not repeat to your wife or anybody else, please do not sit on that alone tonight. In the United States you can call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one real human being who can be with you before you sleep. That is not a wall coming down. That is a rest that was there before the work was, and God is the one who put it there.
