The Car Park You Could Not Get Out Of

It was a Tuesday, which is the part he keeps coming back to. Not a Sunday. A Tuesday, with three things in the diary and none of them hard.

He drove in at ten past nine and parked in the space he always parks in, third from the wall, and turned the engine off, and then he did not get out.

He was not upset. He wants that understood, because if he had been upset there would be something to point at. He was not crying and he was not praying and he was not having what anybody would call a moment. He was sitting in a stationary car in an empty car park looking at a bin and a low brick wall, entirely calm, and his hand would not go to the door handle.

He gave it a minute. Then he gave it another one. Then he found himself thinking, with a kind of scientific interest, that this was quite strange, and he checked the clock, and it had been eleven minutes.

At fourteen he got out. He went in and did the three things and did them well. Nobody who saw him that day would report anything at all.

But he has been carrying those fourteen minutes since March like a stone in a coat pocket.

Because here is what he decided in the car, and he decided it quickly, the way you decide things that are already half decided. He decided that a man who cannot get out of his own car has something wrong with him that is worse than tiredness. He decided that whatever this is, it is a disqualification with a delay on it, and that the delay is the only thing between him and being found out.

And then he did the most costly thing in the whole story, which was that he told nobody. Not his wife. Not the friend he has had since college who would have driven two hours. Nobody, because the fourteen minutes felt like evidence, and you do not hand the prosecution its own exhibit.

He has parked in a different space ever since. He could not tell you why.

Where the power actually pitches its tent

Paul asked three times for something to be taken away. Three times, which for a man like that is an enormous admission on its own, and he wrote down the answer he got, word for word, and the answer is not what people think it is.

And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.2 Corinthians 12:9

The phrase at the end is the one to stand on. The word behind rest upon is a tent word. It means to pitch a tent over something, to tabernacle on it, to come down and dwell on that exact spot.

So the sentence is not that God can cope with weakness, or that He works around it, or that He forgives it. It is that the power of Christ pitches its tent on the place where a person is weak, and camps there.

Now hold that over a stationary car in March. Hear this, and hear it as a fact and not as comfort: those fourteen minutes are not a disqualification, they are the coordinates. That is not my kindness to you. It is what His word says weakness is for, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who takes a verse like that and moves it out of theology and into a man's actual chest.

Now look at what you did with the fourteen minutes, because that is the part that has cost you, not the minutes themselves.

You took a piece of evidence about tiredness and you filed it as evidence about character. That is a different category, and the case has been running ever since, with you as the prosecution and the defense and the only witness, held in private because you decided the exhibit was too damaging to show anybody.

And here is what God says about that trial. It has no jurisdiction. He has never once opened a case on a man for the state of his own strength, and there is not a verse anywhere that treats depletion as a moral fact. Scripture puts weakness in the same sentence as glory and dwelling, and the Holy Spirit is not the one who has been sitting in the gallery of that courtroom taking notes.

There is something else in the story worth naming plainly, and it is the silence.

You told nobody. And the reason you told nobody is that you believed the telling would confirm it. But secrecy is what makes a fourteen minute event into a five month weight. The minutes were light. The carrying of them alone is what has been heavy, and that is not a rebuke either, because a man does not confide an exhibit he thinks convicts him.

You are not on trial. Not today, not in March, not in the space third from the wall. You are covered right now, because His word says grace is sufficient in the present tense and never once made sufficiency depend on the condition of the one receiving it, and the Holy Spirit is the one applying it in a man who has been quietly building a case against himself since spring.

Let me say the plain thing before we go on, because this is written for someone running on empty. If it has gone past tiredness lately, if the thoughts in that parked car have gone anywhere darker than you would say out loud, please do not carry that alone today. That is a tent being pitched exactly where the ground is weakest, and God is the one who pitches it.
