It came out at about midnight, in the dark, with both of them lying on their backs and neither of them asleep.
He had not decided to say it. He had been lying there for forty minutes doing the thing he does, which is going through Sunday, and then going through it again, and at some point his mouth got ahead of him.
He said: I have been wondering whether I should stop.
And then he lay absolutely still and waited for the room to change.
It did not change.
She did not sit up. She did not turn the lamp on. There was no sharp intake of breath, no what do you mean, no how long has this been going on. There was about four seconds of nothing.
And then she reached over and put her hand flat on his chest and said: I know.
That was ten days ago and he has thought about it every day since, and it is not the conversation that is bothering him. The conversation was fine. They talked for a while after that and then they slept.
It is those four seconds.
Because she was not surprised. She has known. And if she has known, then he has not been hiding it as well as he believed he was, which means it has been visible, which means it has been visible for some time, which means it may have been visible to other people.
And under that there is something worse, and he has not been able to put it down.
If she already knew, then it is not new. And if it is not new, then this is not a thought he had one night when he was tired. This is a thing that has been going on inside him long enough for the person who sleeps next to him to have quietly worked it out and made her peace with it.
He does not know how long he has been someone who wants to stop.
Now that is you in the dark, and you knew it was you by the fourth line.

What her four seconds actually meant
Let me say what is not about to happen on this page, because you have braced for both of them.
Nobody here is going to talk you into staying. Not with encouragement, not with guilt, not with a story about a man who nearly walked away and weeps about it now. And nobody here is going to tell you to go. That is not mine to hand you, I do not know your house or your people, and both of those are only different ways of making a very tired man carry a decision this evening.
There is no decision on this page. Set it down for twenty minutes. It will keep.
There is nothing to do here either. No practice to improve, nothing to get up earlier for, no discipline to add. You are running on empty, and a suggestion is the last thing empty needs.
What I want to take off you is one specific weight, and it is not what you said. It is what you decided about yourself when she did not flinch.
So look at a man who said something far more direct than you did, straight to God, out loud, with the evidence still burning in front of him.
He had been given a commission, at a bush that was on fire and was not burning up, by God, personally, with signs performed in his hand to prove it. And after every objection had been answered, this is what he said:
Oh, my Lord, please send someone else.Exodus 4:13
That is the sentence. That is a man looking at a burning bush and asking God to give the job to somebody else.
Now read what happened, because most people only remember half of it.
The text says the anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses. It says that plainly and I am not going to soften it.
And then, in the very same breath, God says: is there not Aaron, your brother? He is coming out to meet you, and when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart. And you shall speak to him and put the words in his mouth, and I will be with your mouth and with his mouth (Exodus 4:14-15).
The bush did not go out. The commission was not withdrawn. God did not find somebody else. He sent help, and He said that the help was already on the road before Moses had finished objecting.
God has never treated a worn out man's honest sentence as a resignation, and the record shows Him answering one with help rather than with dismissal. It is written that He said, is there not Aaron your brother, he is coming out to meet you (Exodus 4:14). It is the Holy Spirit, not this page, who takes a conversation at a burning bush and lays it down beside a bedroom at midnight.
Now the four seconds, and this is the part I want you to actually hear.
You have read her lack of surprise as exposure. As though you have been leaking something shameful and she caught it.
That is not what happened in that room.
She was not surprised because she has been watching somebody she loves get emptier for months and has been waiting, patiently, in the dark, for him to be able to say it. Her hand went on your chest inside four seconds. That is not the response of a woman who has been collecting evidence. That is the response of a woman who has been ready.
Being known before you were ready to be known is not exposure, it is what love does when it is paying attention, and God has done it first. It is written that even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether (Psalm 139:4), and the psalm that says it calls the knowing wonderful rather than frightening. His Spirit is what turns that from a verse into a hand flat on somebody's chest.
And here is the thing about not knowing how long it has been going on.
You are treating that as a measure of how far gone you are. It is not. It is a measure of how long you have been running on empty without anybody asking, and the two are completely different things, and only one of them is about you.
You are not a man who has been secretly leaving for months. You are a man who has been tired for longer than he realized, and heaven has never once counted tiredness as departure. It is written that He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength (Isaiah 40:29), and the faint in that sentence are not being scolded, they are being supplied. The Holy Spirit is the one who reads that over a porch at the end of a day.
And I need to say this plainly, because it matters more than anything else on this page. If any of this has gone further than tiredness, if you have found yourself thinking that everybody would manage better without you in the world at all, please tell a human being tonight, and let her be the one, since she has already shown you what she does with the truth. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Anywhere else, your local crisis line or emergency number, and one person who knows your name and will stay. Being the man everybody talks to does not disqualify you from talking.
The verdict you have been passing on yourself for ten days has no standing and heaven has never once read it out. It is written that there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1), and now is the word in it, not later and not when you have worked out how long. The Holy Spirit is the one who reads that over a man lying awake at midnight.
So sit out on the porch and let this land.
You did not expose yourself at midnight. You said out loud, for the first time, a true thing about how tired you are, and the person beside you had already made room for it and had her hand on your chest inside four seconds.
That is not a catastrophe. That is the safest thing that has happened to you all year.
God answered a man who asked Him to send somebody else by sending him a brother, and the fire did not go out. It is written that He said, is there not Aaron your brother, he is coming out to meet you, and when he sees you he will be glad in his heart (Exodus 4:14). The Spirit of God is the one who brings that to a porch at the end of a long day.
You are no longer the only one who knows. Nothing has been decided. Nothing has been set in motion.
The room did not change because it did not need to.
Declare this over yourself
You are not working anything up here. You speak from where you already stand: in Christ, and Christ in you, and that standing was given to you and is not renewed each Sunday by how much you have left. And you speak it under His will and not your own, because whatever He does with the rest of it is His and the outcome is His. Speak first to the sentence you said in the dark, then to what you decided when she was not surprised, and then turn and speak to Him. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a worn out person.
- Midnight sentence, you are not a betrayal of anybody in this house. God answered a man who asked Him to send somebody else by sending him a brother who was already on the road, and the bush did not go out.
- Verdict I passed on myself in four seconds of silence, you have no standing and heaven has never once recorded you. In the name of Jesus I hand back a charge that no court above ever heard, because there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ and now is the word in it.
- Lord, You knew the word on my tongue before it was on it, and You called that knowing wonderful rather than terrible. I am Yours whichever way this goes, and these two open hands are enough to be holding tonight.
