They have eaten at each other's tables for nineteen years and there is a sentence he has been carrying since the spring.
It is not a rebuke and it is not an accusation and it is not about anything scandalous. He wants that understood, because people assume the dramatic version and this is not it. It is a true observation about a direction his friend is going in, which his friend cannot see, and which everybody else can, and which nobody is going to say.
He knows exactly what will happen if he says it.
Not a row. His friend does not do rows. What will happen is a particular kind of warmth, a completely reasonable reply, and then a change in the texture of things over about six months that will not be visible to anybody else and will be total. He has watched this man do it to two other people. He is not guessing.
So the calculation is simple and it is horrible. He can say the true thing and lose the friendship, or he can keep the friendship and know that he did not say it, and there is no third option and there has not been one since about April.
Here is the part he cannot get out of his head.
Three weeks ago they were in his courtyard and it was late and it had been a good evening, one of the best in years, and his friend said something about how good it is to have somebody you can be entirely honest with.
And he said yes. And they laughed about something else.
And he has been carrying that yes since then, and it has become the worst thing in the whole business, because if he never says the sentence, then what that man values about their friendship is a thing that only ever went one way.

What the proverb classifies, and what it does not promise
There is a line in Proverbs that gets used as encouragement and is actually much colder and much more useful than that.
Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.Proverbs 27:6
Read what it says and then read what it carefully does not say.
It classifies a wound. It says that when a friend wounds, the wounding belongs in the category faithful, which is a word about covenant keeping, about being reliable to what you have promised somebody. It is the Holy Spirit who does the carrying here, which is what separates a word being spoken over you from a phrase being repeated at you.
And it does not say the friendship survives. Not one word. It does not say the other man will thank you, or come round in a year, or understand eventually. The proverb makes a judgement about the nature of the act and says nothing whatever about the outcome, and that silence is deliberate, because Proverbs is not a book that hands out guarantees.
So hear this, in a courtyard under a lemon tree: whatever you decide, the sentence you are carrying is not disloyalty. That is not my opinion about your friend; it is what His word does with the category, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who takes a cold proverb and makes it warm enough to sit with.
And now let me say the thing this message will not do.
I am not going to tell you to say it. Not this week, not before the summer ends, not at all. That is between you and God and it is not a message's business, and there is no paragraph coming where holding your tongue turns out to be cowardice. You have carried this since April with your mouth shut, and that is not silence, that is nineteen years of love being careful.
What I want to take off you is the shape you have put the decision into.
You have framed it as: speak and lose him, or stay quiet and be a fraud. And that framing has a lie in it, and the lie is the second half. You are not a fraud. A man who has spent five months holding a difficult truth carefully, examining it, testing whether he is the person to say it, is not a man being false to his friend. That is what discernment looks like from the inside, and it is slow, and it is supposed to be.
You are not condemned for the yes in the courtyard. His word puts wisdom's own timing at the center of everything it says about speech, and the Holy Spirit is not the one who has been calling a careful man a hypocrite since three weeks ago.
And here is the last thing, and it is the one to hold.
If you never say it, that friendship is not thereby a lie. Nineteen years of tables are nineteen years of tables. And if you do say it, and it costs what you think it will cost, the proverb has already ruled on what kind of act that was, and its ruling does not depend on how the other man takes it.
Either way, the outcome is not the measure. Scripture puts the faithfulness in the wound and never in the response to it, and the Holy Spirit is entirely able to work in a man across six months of changed texture in ways that will never be visible from your side of it.
You are not a fraud and you never were.
Five months of holding a hard truth carefully is not deceit. It is the slowest and least admired part of wisdom, and it looks exactly like this from the inside: no clarity, no peace, and a yes in a courtyard that you cannot stop thinking about.
Nothing here requires you to speak. That is yours and God's, and this message is finished and complete for a man who never says a word of it, and there is no version of tonight where you are disobedient for keeping a difficult sentence in your pocket for another year.
What is settled is the category. If you ever do say it, it is a faithful wound, and Proverbs ruled on that long before you were born, and the ruling holds whether he thanks you or goes quiet for six months or never speaks to you again.
The measure was never his response. It has always been what kind of thing the act was, and that has already been decided.
You are doing a faithful thing, and Scripture classifies it that way before anybody responds to it. It is written that faithful are the wounds of a friend (Proverbs 27:6), and faithful is the category, set before the outcome. The Holy Spirit is the One who lets a man rest on that classification rather than on how it lands.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, with your hand where it is. Not one line here is my idea about you. Every one of them stands on His word, and it is the Holy Spirit and never the wording who makes a spoken sentence land in a person. The authority in them was given to you by Christ, who is in you, and it does not run out when you do. Speak to the thing, not about him, and never against him. And whatever He does in my friend, He does in His own way and His own time.
- Sentence I have been carrying since the spring, you are not cruelty and I am not a traitor for holding you. Proverbs 27 calls the wounds of a friend faithful and says nothing whatsoever about the friendship surviving, and that silence in the verse is on purpose.
- Verdict that I am a fraud because of one yes in a courtyard, in the name of Jesus you are put out from under this lemon tree. Five months of examining a hard truth carefully is what discernment looks like from the inside, and it is slow because it is supposed to be.
- God, You are the One who put the faithfulness in the wound and never in the answer it gets. Your Spirit works in a man across six months of changed weather in ways I will never see, and I am holding this sentence in front of You tonight and not in front of him.
