You Have Eaten Standing Up For A Year

There is a strip of counter by the window, about the width of a plate, and that is where he eats.

It was not a decision. Nobody ever sat down and worked out that the man of the house would take his food standing at the counter with his back to the room. It happened the way a path happens across a field, which is to say one person went that way once because the grass was wet, and then everybody did, and then there was a path.

The house is full most evenings. It has been full most evenings for nine years, and that is not a complaint, because he built it that way on purpose and he would build it that way again. There is always bread. There is always something warm. Somebody is always at that table with a thing they cannot say anywhere else, and he has never once regretted the fact that they know they can come.

But there are eight chairs and there are usually nine people, and he is the ninth, and he is the one who knows where the plates are.

So he stands. He eats fast, facing the window, listening to the room behind him, and he is in the conversation the whole time. He answers from the counter. He laughs from the counter. Nobody in that room has ever thought for one second that he is being left out, because he is not being left out, he is hosting, and hosting is a thing he is extremely good at.

Here is what happened last month.

His wife made a dish that takes most of an afternoon, the one with the apricots in it that his mother used to make, and she made it because it was his. And the evening filled up the way it always does, and by the time he got to the pot there was one spoonful left and he ate it standing at the counter out of the serving dish with a fork, in about eleven seconds, while somebody explained a problem to him from the table.

And she saw him do it. From the doorway. And she did not say anything, because what would she say.

He went to bed that night and lay there and did a piece of arithmetic he had never done before. He tried to remember the last meal he had eaten sitting down in his own house that was not a wedding or a funeral.

He could not find one inside a year.

The widow ate out of that barrel too

Everyone knows the story at Zarephath as a story about a prophet being fed. Read it again and count who else ate.

There is a famine. A woman is out gathering two sticks, and she says the truest sentence in the chapter: she has a handful of meal in a barrel and a little oil in a cruse, and she is making a last meal for herself and her son, and then they will die. That is not despair. That is arithmetic, and she has done it correctly.

And Elijah asks her for a cake first.

Modern ears hear that as a hard thing to ask. Hebrew ears heard the rest of the sentence, and the rest of the sentence is this:

And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days. And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.1 Kings 17:15-16

She, and he, and her house.

She is named first. Not the prophet. The woman who thought she was down to a handful is listed at the front of the list of people who ate, and she ate out of the same barrel she had been afraid to open, many days, for as long as it lasted, which was as long as the famine.

So hear this over you tonight, standing at the counter. You are not the barrel. You are one of the people the barrel feeds, and you always have been. That is not my gentle idea about your situation. It is what His word puts in the order of that verse in 1 Kings 17, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who takes a word order like that and turns it into relief in a real man's chest.

Now look at what that does to the counter.

If you are the supply, then every person who sits down is one plate further from the end of you, and standing up to eat is simply the honest posture of a man rationing himself. That is how it has felt. But if the supply is His and the house is His and the barrel was never yours, then the counter is not stewardship. It is a habit that grew like a path across a field, and nobody meant it, and it can stop.

There is something that happens to a generous man over about nine years, and it is worth naming because it hides inside a virtue. He stops counting himself as one of the people in his house. He would never say that out loud. He would deny it if you asked. But when he lays the table he lays it for the guests, and when he counts the chairs he counts them for everybody else, and the arithmetic simply does not include him any more.

And here is what God says about that arithmetic. It is wrong, and it has always been wrong, and He has never once totted up a household and left the host off the list. His word never asks a man to feed a table he is not seated at, and the Holy Spirit is not the one who taught you to eat facing the window.

You are welcome at your own table right now. Not when the house is quieter. Not when the year is easier. Now, in a full room, with nine people and eight chairs, because welcome is something God does and not something a schedule permits, and Scripture never once records Him seating the guests and forgetting the one who opened the door.

Let me say something plainly here, because this message is written to someone who is running low. If the tiredness has gone somewhere darker lately, if there have been thoughts in that kitchen at night that you would not repeat to anybody, please do not hold that on your own tonight. In the United States you can call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one real human being who will sit down with you before you sleep. That is not a failure of hospitality. That is somebody bringing food to the man who has been bringing it, and God is the one who arranged it.
