The Ones Who Faded Instead Of Leaving

She tried to work out the date once, on a train, and could not do it, and has not tried again.

It was not a Sunday. That is the whole difficulty. There is no last Sunday. There is a slow slope that starts somewhere around a February she can no longer place, where a family who were there every week became a family who were there most weeks, and then a family who came a couple of times a month, and then a family who came at Christmas and once in the spring, and then a family who did not come.

Nobody left. That is what everyone would say if you asked. Nobody had a falling out and nobody wrote a letter and nobody was upset with anybody.

She has counted, on that train, eleven households like that in nine years.

Eleven. Not one of them with a date, a reason, a conversation or a goodbye. And she found herself thinking on that journey that if all eleven had left in a row on a single terrible Sunday, with a letter each, it would have been the worst day of her ministry and it would also have been easier, because there would have been something to hold and something to mourn and something to say.

Instead there is this. A slow attrition made entirely of absences, none of which was ever an event.

Here is what she has never said aloud. She cannot grieve them, because she has never been able to establish that anything happened. Every single time she goes to feel the loss, some accurate and reasonable part of her says: nothing occurred. Life changed. People get busy. That family had a lot on. And that is all true, and it is precisely why there has never been a moment when she was allowed to be sad about any of it.

So it has gone somewhere else. It has become a low permanent watchfulness. She notices, now, the second week somebody misses. She hates that she notices, and she cannot stop, and it has taken something out of the ordinary pleasure of seeing people arrive.

A mercy that arrives daily

Let me name the shape of this before we go anywhere near comfort, because the shape is the thing nobody has named for you.

A grief with no event in it is harder to carry than a grief with one, not easier. A death has a date and a funeral and casseroles. What you have is eleven households of absence spread over nine years with no ceremony attached to any of it, and a mind that keeps disqualifying the sorrow on the grounds that nothing happened.

Something happened. It happened eleven times. It simply happened slowly, and slowness is not the same as absence.

Now, the book to be in for this is Lamentations, and specifically the third chapter, which is one long unrelenting account of a man in grief that does not lift on schedule. And in the middle of it, this.

It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.Lamentations 3:22-23

Look at the timing in that sentence, because the timing is the whole gift.

New every morning. Not new once. Not issued at a single decisive moment and then drawn down. Fresh, daily, one morning at a time, which is exactly the shape of a grief that arrives in small daily installments and never had a date of its own.

So hear this over you, on a train with a notebook you have closed: you are met daily, in the exact rhythm of the thing that has been wearing you. That is not my comfort; it is what His word says about the schedule mercy runs on, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who takes a line about mornings and lays it over nine years of slow subtraction.

And notice what the man says two verses earlier: this I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. Recall is deliberate. He is not reporting a feeling that arrived. He is doing something on purpose in the middle of an unlifted grief, and the verse about mercies is what he chooses to go and get.

Now let me get at the watchfulness, because that is what this has cost you and you have been ashamed of it.

Noticing the second week somebody misses is not paranoia and it is not possessiveness. It is what happens to a person who has lost eleven households without ever being permitted to register a single loss. The grief could not go where grief goes, so it went into vigilance instead, and vigilance is exhausting in a way sorrow is not.

You are not becoming a suspicious woman. His word has a whole book for a grief that does not resolve on time, and the Holy Spirit did not put Lamentations in the Bible so that people in your position would think they were coping wrongly.

And here is the one to carry. You are allowed to grieve something that had no event. God does not require a date, a letter, or a reason before He will meet a loss. Scripture puts the mercies on a daily schedule precisely because some things are lost daily, and the Holy Spirit has been arriving every morning of nine years whether or not one of them ever felt like an occasion.
