The room behind the platform has a kettle that takes four minutes and a chair with one arm gone.
That is where he sits afterwards, every Sunday, for about ten minutes before anybody comes to find him. There is a radiator that ticks. There is a box of old service sheets nobody has thrown away since March. And there is the particular quality of the quiet in a room that is right next to a room where people are still talking, which is not the same as being alone and is not the same as being with anyone.
He said something true this morning. That is the trouble.
He stood up in front of people he knows by name and said that God is near to the brokenhearted, and he meant it, in the sense that he would defend every word of it under any examination you like. A woman on the third row wrote something down. A man he has been praying for since February looked up for the first time in weeks. It landed. It was true and it landed and it was not a performance.
And he felt nothing at all.
Not doubt. He wants that understood, and he has never been able to say it to anybody in his own building, because doubt would at least be a thing with a shape. This is flatter than doubt. He said the words the way you would read out somebody else's letter: accurately, warmly, and from the outside.
Then he came in here and sat down on the chair with one arm gone, and the sentence arrived that has been arriving for about five months now.
You are a fraud.
Nobody in the world would say it to him. He says it to himself in a small room every Sunday at ten past twelve, and then he goes back out and shakes hands and is genuinely glad to see people, which somehow makes it worse.
Now let me stop calling him he.
Because you know the room. Different kettle, different chair. And you know the exact distance between the words coming out of your mouth and the place in you they used to come from, and you have been measuring that distance for months like a man checking a wound to see if it has closed.
So let me say the first thing plainly, before anything else. I am not going to tell you what you should have done. Not from the platform, not in the leaders' meeting, not to anyone. You did not do anything wrong this morning. Sit down. The kettle takes four minutes and there is nothing here you have to fix.

The jar was never the treasure
Paul is writing to a church that has been comparing him unfavorably to more impressive speakers. He is not defending himself. He says something instead that has kept people like you alive for two thousand years.
But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.2 Corinthians 4, verse 7
Hold the picture, because it is a specific one and everything is in it.
A jar of clay in that world was the cheapest object in the house. Common, porous, breakable, worth nothing. You did not display one. You used one until it cracked and then you got another. And Paul says: that is what I am, and inside me there is a treasure, and the two facts are held together on purpose.
Look at the reason he gives. Not even though the jar is ordinary. So that the power is shown to be God's and not ours. The unimpressiveness of the container is doing work in the design. If the jar glowed, nobody could tell where the light was coming from.
You are the jar and you were always meant to be the jar, and the light in you has never once depended on the state of the clay. It is written that we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us (2 Corinthians 4:7), and it is the Holy Spirit, not your reservoir, who carries what was said this morning into the third row.
Now bring that into the room behind the platform.
You have been operating on an assumption that nobody ever taught you and that you would probably deny if it were said out loud: that the true thing you said was true because you were full when you said it. That the feeling was the fuel. That when the tank is dry, what comes out is somehow counterfeit, even if every word is accurate.
That is the jar claiming to be the light.
The word you said this morning was true when you said it. It was not made true by your condition and it is not unmade by it. The woman on the third row did not receive your reservoir. She received something that came from God through a common, porous, tired container, which is the only delivery method there has ever been.
What you said does its work whether or not you felt a thing while you were saying it. It is written that His word does not return empty but accomplishes that which He purposes (Isaiah 55:11), and the Holy Spirit is the One who carries it across a room, which is why the delivery was never resting on the state of the man delivering it.
And this is where I want to be exact, because your conscience has been busy in that room for five months and it has been convicting you of the wrong thing.
Saying something true that you cannot currently feel is not deceit. It is what a person does who has decided that the truth does not belong to their mood. The words were not a claim about your interior state. They were a claim about God, and they were accurate.
You have been prosecuted in that back room for something heaven never charged you with. It is written that there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1), and the Holy Spirit is the One who convicts toward a person rather than about them, which is exactly how you can tell that the voice in that room for five months has not been His.
The distance you have been measuring is real. I am not going to pretend the flatness is nothing, and I am not going to hand you the thing everybody hands people like you, which is more. More discipline, more prayer before the service, more surrender, more of whatever it was that emptied you. You are not short of effort. A depleted person prescribed effort is a person being asked to pay a bill out of an empty account, and it is not what God is doing here.
He is not asking you for more. He is telling you what you are carrying and who made it shine.
So here is what is true in that room, on that chair, with the radiator ticking.
You are not a fraud. Not this morning, not for the last five months, not in any week where the feeling did not come. The word you carried was real, the God who sent it is real, and the jar being empty is not evidence of anything except that jars empty.
And you are held today. Not once the fire returns. Not on the condition that you get something back before next Sunday. Today, in the flatness, in the exact state you are in with the kettle still boiling.
You are held in the dry month on exactly the same terms as in a full one, and the terms were never your terms. It is written that God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever (Psalm 73:26), written by a man who had just said that his flesh and his heart had failed. The Holy Spirit is the One who makes that a chair under somebody rather than a sentiment.
There is nothing to do about this. Nothing to resolve, nothing to promise, no better version of you being negotiated for. This one is a gift and it has no invoice attached.
One more thing, said plainly and only once. If the flatness has gone further than flat, if some part of you does not want to be here in the morning, please reach a person before you reach anything else. Someone outside your building, a friend whose number you know without looking, or your local emergency number. In the United States you can call or text 988. Carrying other people does not disqualify you from being carried, and I would ask this of anyone I love.
Declare this over yourself
You are not talking your feelings round. You are speaking from ground that is already under you: you are in Christ, and His authority over your own house has been given to you, so you may speak it flat and tired and it loses nothing. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a worn out person. And however He answers, whatever next Sunday feels like, the power in the jar was never yours to generate.
- Words I said on Sunday, you were true when I said you and you are true in this room now. Scripture says we hold this treasure in jars of clay so that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us, so in the name of Jesus the treasure did not dim when the jar went quiet.
- Guilt sitting in the chair beside me, you are not conviction and you do not speak for God. The Lord is the strength of my heart, so I am held today with open hands and nothing left to prove to anybody.
- God, You are the power in this jar and You always were, and I thank You that I am carried on the days I cannot feel a thing. I am Yours in a dry month exactly as I am Yours in a full one, and this flatness is a season and never a verdict.
