It is the one with the magnet in the shape of a strawberry, and it has been on that fridge door for eleven years.
You know every mark on it. The blue pen is you. The green pen is the person you live with, and the green pen writes smaller because the green pen has been fitting itself into the gaps left by the blue pen since before either of you noticed it was happening.
Look at the month.
Every Sunday is gone. That is not a complaint, that is a fact, and it stopped being remarkable in about year two. Look at the two evenings a week that are gone as well, and the Saturday that got taken back in February because of the thing nobody could have foreseen, and the week in August that had a felt tip line drawn through it and then had the line crossed out again.
Look at the fourteenth. Somebody drew a small star on the fourteenth about six weeks ago, in green pen. And then last Thursday somebody wrote in blue, over the top of the star, in the small careful writing you use when you know exactly what you are doing to somebody.
And she saw it. Before you told her. She was getting the milk out.
She did not shout. That is the part you have not been able to put down. She just looked at it for a second and then closed the fridge, and about an hour later, when the two of you were the only ones in the room, she said the sentence.
I would rather you had a normal job.
She is fifteen. She said it flat, without any edge to it at all, the way you say a thing you worked out a long time ago and have finally decided to mention. And then she went upstairs, and you stood there in the kitchen with the strawberry magnet in front of you.
You have preached on Sunday out of a tank that emptied months ago. You have sat with other people's marriages while your own house got the leftovers. You have taken the job that pays what it pays, and you have never once said out loud what that has meant for the people at home, because saying it feels like ingratitude.
But that sentence has been running in you all week.
And it is not the sentence that is doing the damage. It is the arithmetic underneath it, the one you have been doing quietly for years and have never shown a living soul.
The total of what your calling has cost the people who never chose it.

Unless the Lord builds it
I am not going to give you a strategy. You have had strategies. If another strategy were going to help, you would have been helped years ago. It is the Holy Spirit who does the carrying here, which is what separates a word being spoken over you from a phrase being repeated at you.
I want to sit down beside you, in that kitchen, and read you two lines that were written by a man who knew exactly what it costs to build things for God.
Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labour in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.Psalm 127:1
Now hold that against the last eleven years of the blue pen.
Beloved, you have been building the house.
Not the church. The church is not what that verse is talking about here, and it is not what I am talking about either. I mean you have been carrying the whole weight of the outcome, of the growth, of whether it holds together, of whether anybody stays, and underneath all of it, of whether your family is all right, and you have been doing it as though the entire thing rests on how much of you goes into it.
And the verse says, gently and without one word of blame, that this was never how it worked.
You are not the one holding that building up, and you were never the one holding it up. It is written that unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain (Psalm 127:1), and it is the Holy Spirit, not this page, who takes a line out of a song of ascents and stands it beside a calendar on a fridge door.
Then look at what comes next, because the next line is the one that undoes people like you.
It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.Psalm 127:2
He gives to his beloved sleep.
Not to his workers. Not to the ones who got the balance right. To his beloved, which is what you are before you are anything else you have ever been called, and it is a gift, which means it is handed over rather than achieved.
You are beloved before you are useful, and that name was given to you rather than earned by a single one of those eleven years. It is written that the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God (Romans 8:16), so the naming is not something you have to work up at a kitchen table at eleven at night. The Holy Spirit is the One who says it in a man before anybody else does.
So I am not going to tell you to try harder at being present, or to be more disciplined with your evenings, or to surrender it more thoroughly, or to pray about it more than you already have at two in the morning in the front seat of a parked car. You are not depleted because you have not done enough. Prescribing effort to somebody in your condition is the cruelest thing anybody does to ministers, and I will not do it.
Here is what I will say, and I want you to take it slowly.
Your daughter is not a bill you have run up.
She is fifteen, and she loves you, and she said something true, and true is not the same as final. She was not delivering a verdict on your life. She was telling you she misses you, in the only vocabulary a fifteen year old has for that, and there is a version of you that can hear that as information rather than as sentencing, and I would like to get you to that version tonight.
You are able to hear what she said without being condemned by it, because the accusing voice in that kitchen has never once been His. It is written that there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1), and the Holy Spirit is the One who tells the difference in a man between a conviction that leads somewhere and a guilt that only circles.
And the cost is real. I am not going to pretend it away, because you would stop listening to me if I did, and rightly. There are things those people at home have carried that they did not sign up for. That is true.
But you are not the only one carrying it, and you never were.
The One who called you is not standing at a distance holding a ledger and waiting to see whether you can cover it. He has been in that house the whole time. In the Saturdays. In the meal that went cold. In the girl on the stairs. Nothing that has been spent in your household has fallen out of His hands, and none of it went unseen, and none of it is being counted against you.
You have every one of those Saturdays on record with Him, and not one of them is filed against you as a debt. It is written that God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints (Hebrews 6:10), and the Holy Spirit is what makes that a hand on a shoulder in a kitchen rather than a fact about a letter.
So this is what we are going to do, and it takes one page and about four minutes.
We are not going to fix the calendar tonight. There is a conversation to have with the green pen, and there may well be things to change, and none of that is what this moment is for.
We are going to move the total.
You have been holding it. All of it. What it has cost them, whether it was worth it, whether they will be all right, whether you have ruined anything. That entire load is going to come off you and go to the One whose house this actually is, out loud, with their names in front of you.
You are handing the total over tonight, and it goes where it always belonged. It is written to cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you (1 Peter 5:7), and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes a handing over on a kitchen table a real transaction rather than a wish.
And you are speaking for them, not over them. You do not get to decide what your daughter does with any of this, and I would not let you try. You bless her, and you hand her weight to God, and you leave her free.
One more thing, because it needs saying in a message aimed at you. If it has gone past exhaustion, if there is a part of you that has begun to think everyone would manage better without you, tell a human being tonight. Not a board member. A doctor, a friend outside the building, or a crisis line, and in the United States you can call or text 988. You are not the strong one tonight. You are a person, and you are allowed to be helped.
Declare this over yourself
Say these over the names. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing has nothing to do with how the last quarter went; the authority in these words is His, delegated to you, carried in His Name. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a tired man. And however He answers for each of the people on that page, and He will deal with each of them in a way that is His and not yours to script, the weight comes off you tonight.
- Guilt, get off this house, because you are not the Holy Spirit and you never had the right to speak here. The Word of God says that unless the Lord builds the house its builders labor for nothing, so this build is His and this house is His, in the name of Jesus.
- Cost of this calling, you are not carried by my children on their own, and you are not mine to carry on my own either. The Lord who gives His beloved sleep is holding what I cannot hold, and I bless my daughter and I hand her weight to Him.
- Lord, You saw every Saturday they gave up and every meal that went cold in this kitchen, and I thank You that not one of them went unnoticed by You. I am not the builder of this house, and in Jesus' name I put down the total that was never mine to add up.
Psalm 127:1
