My Family PaysIsaiah 54:17

She Heard Them In The Car Park

This message is for your daughter hearing two people criticize you in the car park and asking you about it in the car

She was nine, and she was doing what nine year olds do in a car park after a service, which is walking on the low wall with her arms out.

The two people were about ten feet away by the bins, and they did not see her, and there is no version of this where they meant her to hear it. He wants that on the record at the top, because he has thought about this for a long time and he is clear about it. They were tired, and they had a real disagreement about something, and they said it out loud in a place they thought was empty, and everybody in the world has done that.

She heard about eleven seconds of it.

She did not say anything at the time. She got in the car and put her belt on and looked out of the window for about two miles, and then said, in a voice that was trying very hard to be casual: what does out of his depth mean?

He said something. He does not remember exactly what. He remembers his hands on the wheel and a roundabout and a sensation like cold water going down the inside of his chest.

She is fourteen now, and she has never mentioned it again, and he has thought about it approximately once a week for five years.

Here is what he has not been able to get past. He can take it. He has been criticized at length and in writing and in meetings, and some of it was fair and some of it was not, and he has a place to put all of that and he is not a fragile man.

What he cannot put anywhere is the picture of a nine year old on a wall with her arms out, doing nothing, being handed an idea about her father by two people who did not know she was there.

That is the injury. Not the phrase. He has been called worse to his face. It is that his daughter was standing in a car park at nine years old and something arrived in her that he did not choose and could not intercept, and she carried it two miles in the car before she could work out how to ask.

She Heard Them In The Car Park

Whose job the vindication is

There is a verse people use as a shield, and it is worth reading the whole of it rather than the famous half, because the second half is where the weight sits.

No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.Isaiah 54:17

Two things in that sentence, and both of them matter here.

The first is the word heritage. It is an inheritance word. It is not something obtained by performing well; it is what belongs to a category of person by virtue of whose they are. God is describing a standing possession of His servants, which means it was in place in that car park before anybody opened their mouth.

The second is the last clause, and it is the one that takes the weight off you. Their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD. Not of them. Not something they establish, or defend, or clear up afterwards.

So hear this, with your hands on a steering wheel five years later: the defending of your name is not your work and never was. That is not my encouragement; it is what His word says the source of a servant's righteousness is, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who takes a clause like that off a page and sets a man's shoulders down.

Now let me be careful about the middle of that verse, because it is regularly misused and I will not misuse it at you.

Every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn is not permission to go after people. Those two by the bins are not your enemies and this message does not make them into any. They were two tired people having a conversation they thought was private, and if you saw them tomorrow you would be glad to see them, and that is exactly right.

What the verse condemns is the judgment, not the persons. It says the verdict does not stand. It does not hand you anybody to punish.

And now the part that is actually about your daughter.

You could not intercept it. That is true and it is the source of the whole five years, and I am not going to tell you it was fine, because eleven seconds did arrive in a nine year old and you did not choose them.

But look at what has happened since, because you have never counted it. She has had five more years of evidence. Five years of watching you at close range, in your own house, at the end of bad weeks. Whatever eleven seconds put into her, she has had a great deal more data than that since, and children weigh what they see at home far more heavily than what they overhear by the bins.

You are not the thing she heard. His word puts a servant's righteousness in God's own hands and never once makes it the property of whoever was talking in the car park, and the Holy Spirit has been the one shaping what your daughter actually knows about her father for five years.

You may bless her tonight and hand the whole thing over. Not command her about what to think, and not decide her conclusions for her, because her mind is hers and not yours. Bless her, and let the vindicating be done by the One whose job it is.

The breakthrough

She has had five years of evidence.

Eleven seconds arrived in a nine year old and you could not stop it, and that is a real thing that happened. And since then she has had a thousand ordinary mornings in a house with you in it, and children build their picture of a parent out of the long accumulation and not out of one overheard phrase.

You are not required to correct what she heard. You could not do it then and you cannot do it now, and the reason you do not have to is that the righteousness of a servant of the LORD is of Him and not of you, and it has been His to establish since before she got in the car.

Nothing is asked of you here. No conversation with a fourteen year old, no clearing the air with anybody, no defense to mount. Write her name and bless her.

You are not required to mount a defense, because the answering was never assigned to you. It is written that no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment, this is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their vindication from me, declares the Lord (Isaiah 54:17). The vindication is named as His, and the Holy Spirit is the One who settles that in a man who overheard something in a car park.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, over the page. Not one line here is my idea about you. Every one of them stands on His word, and it is the Holy Spirit and never the wording who makes a spoken sentence land in a person. The authority in them was given to you by Christ, who is in you, and it does not run out when you do. Speak to the thing, not about the people, and never against them. And whatever He does in my daughter, He does in His own way and His own time.

  1. Words my daughter heard across a car park, you do not get to teach her who her father is. Isaiah 54 says every tongue that rises in judgment shall be condemned, and it condemns the verdict and never once hands me a person to be angry at.
  2. Five years of assuming that eleven seconds is what stayed in her, in the name of Jesus you are put out of this car. She has had a thousand ordinary mornings since, and children build a father out of the long accumulation and not out of the bins.
  3. God, You are the One who said their righteousness is of me, and heritage is a word for what belongs to a servant before anything happens. Your Spirit has been shaping what she actually knows for five years, and I am blessing her name over this page and defending nothing.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
