The passage came up in the series in the ordinary way, eleven weeks ago, when she planned it.
That is the detail she keeps holding on to, and she has checked it twice, and she is right about it. She wrote that series in March. She had no idea in March about anything that has happened since June. The text arrived on the list because it comes next in the letter, and it comes next in the letter because it comes next in the letter, and nobody in the world chose it for anybody.
And it lands on Sunday, and there is a family in row four for whom the last three months have been exactly this subject.
Everybody in that building knows. Not the details, but enough. The kind of thing where people are careful. There has been a certain quality to how the room handles that family since about the middle of June, and the family has handled it with enormous grace, and it has been the quiet subject underneath everything for weeks.
So on Sunday she will stand up and read a text that speaks directly into it, and she will teach it faithfully, because that is what it says and she is not going to say something else.
And four people in row four will sit there and be certain that this is aimed at them.
She has been round it perhaps forty times. She could skip it. Nobody would ever know, and there are eleven reasonable ways to skip a passage that nobody would query. She could preach it and add a disclaimer at the top, which would be worse, because a disclaimer is a spotlight with an apology attached. She could speak to them beforehand, which she has thought hardest about and which she is fairly sure would land as a warning and would put them through a whole week of it before Sunday even arrives.
There is no move on the board that does not cost somebody something.
And she noticed, on Thursday, that at some point in the last fortnight she stopped thinking about what the text says and started thinking entirely about how it will be received, and that she has now spent more hours managing an outcome than preparing a message.

Whose job the freeing is
There is a sentence about truth that everybody can quote and almost nobody reads in context, and the context is the part that takes the weight off a person in your position.
If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.John 8:31-32
Look at the subject of the verb.
The truth shall make you free. Not the teacher. Not the framing. Not the pastoral skill of whoever happens to be holding the microphone. The freeing is something the truth does, on its own, in a person, and the verse names it as an active agent doing its own work.
So hear this, on a Thursday with a page in front of you: the outcome in row four is not yours to engineer. That is not my reassurance; it is where His word puts the agency, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who takes a subject and a verb like that and lifts a fortnight of management off a woman's shoulders.
Now let me be plain about the thing I am not going to say.
I am not going to tell you to preach it. That is not this message's business and it never was. You may preach it, or skip it, or preach it differently, and none of those decisions is being graded here, and there is no version of the next paragraph where silence turns out to be disobedience. You know that room, and I do not, and God has given you that room and not me.
What I am going to take off you is the job you have quietly picked up, which is the job of controlling what happens inside four people.
That job does not exist. It has never existed. You cannot cause a family to hear something charitably and you cannot prevent them from hearing it personally, and the fortnight you have spent trying is a fortnight spent on something that was never on offer. That is why it has produced no relief. There is no amount of skill that gets you the outcome, because the outcome lives inside somebody else.
You are not responsible for what a text does in a person. His word gives the freeing to the truth itself and never once assigns it to the one who reads it out loud, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the applying, in row four and in every other row, at a depth no preparation has ever been able to reach.
And here is the thing I most want you to have. God knew in March.
You wrote that series in March with no information about June. The text landed on the eleventh week of a series by ordinary sequence, and the God who was arranging that room in March had all of June in front of Him.
That does not make Sunday easy and it does not tell you what to do. But it does mean that the thing you have been experiencing as an unfortunate collision may not be a collision at all, and that whatever you decide, you are not standing in the middle of an accident.
The freeing is not yours.
Whatever you do on Sunday, and it is entirely your call, the thing that happens in four people is happening at a level you have never had access to, and the fortnight of management has been an attempt to reach a place that has no door in it from your side.
Put it down. Not the care, which is right and is why you are in this at all. Put down the job of producing an outcome inside somebody else, because that job was never assigned and cannot be done and has been eating the hours you had.
And nothing here requires you to say anything. If you skip it, you have not failed and this message still stands. If you preach it, the truth will do what truth does and you will not be the one doing it.
You are held on Sunday morning either way.
You are handling something that sets people free rather than something that damages them, and that is what it is regardless of how one family hears it. It is written, you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32). The Holy Spirit is the One who does the setting free, and He is not blocked by how a sentence lands in one row.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, with your hand where it is. Not one line here is my idea about you. Every one of them stands on His word, and it is the Holy Spirit and never the wording who makes a spoken sentence land in a person. The authority in them was given to you by Christ, who is in you, and it does not run out when you do. Speak to the thing, not about it. And whatever He does in that family, He does in His own way and His own time.
- Row four on a Sunday morning, you are not mine to manage and you never were. John 8 says the truth shall make you free, and the freeing is a thing the truth does on its own in a person, and it was never assigned to the one holding the page.
- Job of controlling what happens inside four people, in the name of Jesus I set you down on this table. There is no amount of skill that reaches inside somebody else, and a fortnight spent trying was a fortnight spent on a thing that was never on offer.
- God, You are the One who knew in March what June would bring, and You had all of it in front of You when that series was written. Your Spirit does the applying at a depth no preparation has ever reached, and I am carrying the text on Sunday and not the outcome.
