You Asked For A Door And Hoped It Stayed Shut

It was the back step, and it was late, and the reason it happened there is that the back step is the only place in that house where nobody can see him.

He had not planned to say anything. He was sitting down because his legs had made the decision for him after a very long day, and he had a glass of water he had not drunk, and the yard was doing what a yard does at that hour.

And what came out of his mouth, out loud, in his own voice, was: God, if there is a way out of this, I would take it.

He heard it in the air. That is the part that will not leave him alone. It was not a thought he caught himself having. He said it, in words, in a yard, to God, and there is no way to un-hear a thing you said out loud.

He sat there for a while afterwards. Then he took the glass in, and rinsed it, and went up.

That was in April.

And what has been going on since April is not guilt, exactly, though there is some of that. It is dread.

Because he believes God hears him. He has told hundreds of people that God hears them, and he meant it every time, and he still means it. Which leaves him in this position: he asked the God who hears for a door, and now every unexpected thing that happens is a candidate.

The letter that came in June about the lease. The conversation in the car park that could have gone one of three ways. His wife saying, out of nowhere, that she had always liked the coast.

He looks at each of them and thinks: is that it. Is that you answering me. Did I do this.

He has told nobody. Because how would that sentence even begin.

Now that is you on the step, and you knew it was you before the end of the first line.

The thing you said out loud has been said before

Let me tell you what is not about to happen on this page, because you are braced for both of them.

Nobody here is going to talk you into staying. Not with encouragement, not with guilt, not with a story about a man who nearly walked away and is so glad now. And nobody here is going to tell you to go, because that is not mine to hand you, I do not know your house or your years, and both of those are only different ways of making a very tired man carry a decision tonight.

There is no decision on this page. Set it down for twenty minutes. It will keep.

There is nothing to do here either. No practice to sharpen, nothing to get up earlier for, no discipline to add. You are running on empty, and a suggestion is the last thing empty needs.

What I want to take off you is one very specific weight, and it is not the tiredness. It is the dread. It is the idea that a sentence you said on a step in April was a lever, and that you pulled it, and that something is now on its way toward you because of it.

So come with me to a garden at night, where somebody said it better and harder than you did.

He was hours away from the worst thing that has ever happened to anybody. He knew exactly what was coming. And He knelt down and said this:

Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done. Luke 22:42 It is the Holy Spirit, not anybody writing, who takes what is written and makes it land in the room you are actually in.

Say the first half of that on its own, because you have never let yourself hear it on its own. The Holy Spirit is what turns a sentence that is true into a sentence that is true about you.

Remove this cup from me.

That is a request for a way out. Out loud, in words, in a garden, to God. It is the same sentence you said in your yard in April, and it is in the mouth of the sinless Son of God, and the Bible reports it three times.

Asking God for a way out is not rebellion, and Jesus Himself asked out loud for one before He said anything else. It is written, Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me (Luke 22:42), and heaven did not treat it as treachery. It is the Holy Spirit, not this page, who takes a sentence from a garden at night and sets it down on a back step in a small yard.

And look at what happened next in that garden, because it is the answer to your dread.

The cup was not removed. And this is what came instead:

And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him.Luke 22:43

Not a rebuke. Not a warning. Not a set of consequences arriving because He had dared to ask. Strength, delivered, in the middle of the night, to somebody who had just asked for a way out.

God did not answer an honest request for a door by sending a punishment through it, and He has not been doing that to you since April. It is written that an angel appeared to Him, strengthening Him (Luke 22:43), and that is what heaven sent to the man who asked. His Spirit is what makes that a comfort in a yard rather than a scene in a book.

Now, the dread itself, and I want to name what it actually is, because you have been carrying it as though it were discernment.

It is not discernment. It is a tired man reading his own circumstances as a verdict on his own prayer, at eleven at night, with nobody in the room to say anything back.

A letter about a lease is a letter about a lease. A conversation in a car park is a conversation. Your wife has always liked the coast, and she said so, and she is allowed to say things.

God is not conducting your life as a series of replies to one sentence you said on a step, and He has never once handled a tired man that way. It is written that as a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him, for he knows our frame, he remembers that we are dust (Psalm 103:13-14). Compassion is the word in it. The Holy Spirit is the one who reads that over a man watching the post.

And the second half of what Jesus said is yours too, and it is the safest thing on this page.

Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.

You are allowed to want out and hand the outcome over in the same breath. That is not double mindedness. That is the pattern He gave you, in the hardest night anybody ever had, and He did not have to take back the first half in order to say the second.

Your April prayer is safe with Him because you handed Him the wanting rather than the deciding, and He has never once been careless with what a tired man hands Him. It is written that He said, nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done (Luke 22:42), and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that a place to stand and not just a phrase to admire.

And I need to say this plainly, because it matters more than anything else here. If any of this has gone further than tiredness, if you have found yourself thinking that everybody would manage better without you in the world at all, please tell a human being tonight. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Anywhere else, your local crisis line or emergency number, and one person who knows your name and will sit with you until it is light. Being the man who prays for everybody does not disqualify you from asking somebody to sit down.
