The Page in the Back of the Notebook

There is a page near the back of a notebook, written in blue biro, and it is the most private thing that man owns.

It is a list. Three columns, and he did them properly, because he is the sort of person who does things properly even when he is doing something he is ashamed of. On the left, what he could do instead. In the middle, what it would need. On the right, roughly what it would come to per month, worked out in his own handwriting with two figures crossed out and corrected.

He wrote it on a Tuesday afternoon in November, at a kitchen table, in about forty minutes, with the back door open because it had been mild.

Then he closed the notebook, and put it in the drawer with the batteries and the fuse wire, and went and collected somebody from the station.

He has not looked at it since. He knows exactly which page it is. He could find it with his thumb.

And here is what has actually been happening in the months since, which is worse than the page: he has been prosecuting himself. Quietly, all day, in the background, while he does everything else. He sits in a car outside somebody's house before going in, and the sentence that comes up is not I am tired. The sentence that comes up is what kind of man writes a list like that.

He has not told a living soul. Not the person he would ordinarily tell, because that person is in the same building. Not his wife, because she has already given up enough and he is not going to hand her that as well. So it has stayed in the drawer with the fuse wire, and it has grown, the way things do when you keep them in the dark and feed them nothing but your own voice.

Forty minutes on a Tuesday. And he has been carrying it like a confession he cannot make.

Now that is you at the kitchen table, and I suspect you knew that by the third line. You know the page. You may not have written it down, but you have written it somewhere, and you have been quietly convicting yourself of it ever since.

Nobody is going to argue with you here

Let me tell you what is not going to happen on this page, because you have been braced for both of them.

Nobody is going to talk you into staying. Not by encouragement, not by guilt, not by a story about somebody who nearly walked away and is so glad now. And nobody is going to tell you to go, either. That is not mine to say, I do not know your life, and the truth is that both of those are just different ways of making a very tired person carry a decision right now.

There is no decision on this page. Put it down for twenty minutes. It will still be there.

There is also nothing here to do. No practice to improve, no discipline to add, nothing to get up earlier for. You are running on empty and the last thing empty needs is a suggestion.

What I actually want to do is take one specific weight off you, and it is this one: the idea that having thought about it has finished you.

You are not finished, and the thought you had on a Tuesday has no power at all to finish you. It is written that He knows our frame and remembers that we are dust (Psalm 103:14), and remembers there is tender rather than disappointed. It is the Holy Spirit, not this page, who takes a sentence like that and lays it over a man in a parked car.

So look at what happened to a man in the Word who got much further than a page in a notebook.

He was the most publicly effective man of his generation. He had stood in front of a nation. And a few days later he was under a broom tree in the wilderness, alone, out of everything he had, and what he said to God there was so bleak that most people flinch reading it.

Now watch what heaven does about it.

And the angel of the Lord came again a second time and touched him and said, "Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you."1 Kings 19:7

Read it slowly. There is no rebuke. There is no discussion of what he said. There is no question about whether a man who talks like that is still fit for what he was given.

There is bread. There is water. There is a hand on the shoulder and permission to sleep, and then, when he wakes, more bread. Twice. Because once was not enough, and God could see that once was not enough.

And there is a sentence I want you to hear in your own kitchen: the journey is too great for you.

God said that. Not as an accusation. As an observation, made kindly, by the only one in the story who was not disappointed in him. The distance was genuinely too far for the strength he had. That was simply true, and God said it out loud before He said anything else.

Nobody asked Elijah to explain the broom tree. Nobody made him account for it afterwards. It never came up again.

You are not going to be asked to account for that page, because heaven never opened a file on it. It is written that as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us (Psalm 103:12), and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that a real distance in a man rather than a phrase he can quote.

So the page in your drawer is not evidence against you. It is the same broom tree in blue biro. It is what an exhausted person does, and the exhaustion is real, and God has looked at it and reached for bread rather than a rebuke.

You are fed before you are questioned, and that is the order heaven has always worked in. It is written that the angel of the Lord came a second time and said, arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you (1 Kings 19:7), and the Holy Spirit is the One who brings that same order into a kitchen with the back door open.

And I need to say the next part plainly, because it matters more than anything else here. If any of this has gone further than tiredness, if you have found yourself thinking that everyone would manage better without you at all, please tell a human being tonight. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Anywhere else, your local crisis line or emergency number, and one person who knows your name and can sit with you. Being the one who always holds the phone does not disqualify you from picking it up. It is the most ordinary and the most honest thing a person can do.
